About Fogs of Otmoor and eVisioner

Who?

eVisioner is a loose and shifting collection of people who build fun and unusual applications for the Web.

What?

Fogs of Otmoor is the second major eVisioner application. It has been on the drawing board since 1998, but is only now reaching the public. Fogs of Otmoor is a unique chess variant for teams of up to 17 players. Game play focuses on cooperative strategy, scarcity of information, and a fast changing field of play.

When?

Fogs of Otmoor has been in the works since 1998. However, because of distractions, other projects, etc., it is only now making its debut. The underlying concepts and technology of Fogs of Otmoor are slowly working their way through the patient process now. Actual construction of The Game application has been a multi-year on and off endeavor. Oh, and by the way, Fogs of Otmoor is very much still in the Alpha release stage of life. Caveat emptor...

Where?

eVisioner is centered in the Northeast US around greater Boston. Where else?

Why?

Mainly for fun of it. To some degree, for the pleasure of dispatching the technical challenges. And also to delve into longstanding interests like group communications, information management, and competitive organization. Definitely not because we are chess masters—we aren't.

Otmoor? What is that about?

Otmoor is a tract of fenland in the South of England. It features as the inspiration for the chess theme in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass. That macro scale chess match imagery, where humans are the chess pieces, fits well with the gaming style of Fogs of Otmoor.

The name Fogs of Otmoor also makes reference to the phrases ""dogs of war" and "fog of war". Both phrases conjure up images of competitive chaos and uncertainty in a campaign. With Fogs of Otmoor's information overload and focus on cooperative communications these phrases are apt descriptions of a game.
