Delegation

What does delegation mean, and why would I want to allow it?

When you create a game, one of the attributes to consider is delegation. Your options for this game attribute are:
  • No delegation
  • Players may delegate to team members
  • Top board player may delegate any position to any team member
  • Top board player may delegate any position

Delegation means requiring that a player play a piece that is assigned to a different player. When a piece is delegated the player who is delegated to must play the piece. If turns are timed and the player delegated to does not make a move, the piece's turn is lost.

The last of the delegation options is the least restrictive, from the Top board player's point of view. If you set Top board player may delegate any position you are saying that the Top board player may require any player at all, regardless of if they are on the team playing, to take over a piece. If you select the slightly more restrictive Top board player may delegate any position to any team member you are giving the Top board player to have another player play a piece, regardless of if that team member is joined into the game already. Since there are no limits to the number of players on a team, this is still a powerful option.

The most pragmatic of the options is Players may delegate to team members. This selection is less like the designated hitter rule in baseball, and more of a way to help players who may not be available to play at a given time.

Players take advantage of delegation by going to the game Information page and clicking on the yellow icon () to open the game's Details page. On the Details page you would click the Delegate icon () to go to the Delegate page where you would fill out a simple form.

Perhaps the most interesting part of delegation is the question of who can undelegate. When you fill out the delegation form, you must choose between five options for who can change the delegation:
  • The player who took the original action
  • Any player involved in the situation
  • The primary player affected by the action
  • The primary and secondary players affected by the action
  • The secondary player affected by the action

In brief, the user taking the action is the delegator—most often the Top board player. The primary player affected is the player who's piece is delegated to another player. That other player who is delegated to is the secondary player affected by the action. Finally, the option Any player involved in the situation means all three of the above mentioned players.
