What do we do if not all 34 pieces have players?
The answer is to skip the turns of the pieces which do not have players. Skipping a piece's turn is done by going to the game Detail page (to get there first open the game's Information page, then click on the green dot ( ) in the top left hand navigation area where it says Sign up to play). The Skip icon ( ) is in line with each piece on both teams. If the piece is skipped the icon is gray ( ). If you do not have the ability to skip a piece the icon is white ( ).
Do I have to skip one-by-one all 16 other pieces if I'm just going to play the Top piece?
Skips are not really a game attribute, but you can set up "bulk" skips at the same time that you create a game. The initial skip options are:
No skips
Skip everyone except the Top board players
The latter option lets you immediately skip over all the Lower board pieces. This is the option to choose if you want to play a game that closely resembles standard Chess. It is also a helpful option if you are going to play with just a few other players and don't want to play each piece. Keep in mind that the top option, No skips, does not prevent players from setting skips. It only means that no skips will be set as part of creating the game.
Any player can choose to skip their turn or turns. Skips can be set at any point in a game. In fact, there is no way to turn off the ability to set a skip. At the same time, skips can be set for any piece by any player on a team. The only way to bring order to the area of turn skips is for you and your teammates to work together.

Two skip settings. The top one shows that a skip was set. The bottom shows that no skip is set, but also that the player does not have the ability to set a skip—either because the viewing player is not in the game or is on the other side.

When you create a game you have two skip options. Remember that "No skips" does not mean no skips can be set in the future.

When you are playing you can see which turns have been skipped by looking at the Turns List control in the top right hand side above the board. The skipped turns are in dark gray, and are labeled "skipped".
