What is the difference between teams?
Who can join a team?
Teams are just players that band together because of shared interest, talents, experience, etc. However, all teams are different. Although there are not as many different attributes of a team as there are of a game, there are several ways to configure your team.
Like players and games, teams have both names and identifiers. A team's name might be The Giants but its ID would be the_giants. Naming your team is the first way of setting a team apart from the crowd. To be more descriptive, just add a description. Your description can be anything you like, up to 400 characters in length.
To help you attract players with a certain skills profile, you can add a level to your team. The level is only a very general suggestion of the skill and experience that a player should have to join the team. While the level is not exact or explicitly enforceable, it is a good way to advertise where your team stands and who should consider joining.
When your team has attracted the attention of the masses, the next question is who can join? You can set your team to be:
Completely open, anyone may join
Joinable via an application that must be approved by the team's creator
Invitation only
The first option, a completely open team, takes no management time on your part. However, you get no say over who joins your team. Depending on how you like to configure your games, an open team may be a competitive disadvantage if your opponents are willing and able to join your games as members of your team. Perhaps it sounds paranoid, but it is a possibility.
Teams that are joined through application or invitation are more exclusive. The difference between the two settings is really only in direction. Does a player come to you asking to join, or do you go to the player and suggest he or she sign up to the team? In either case, as the team's founder, you can make the call about who is on the team. While you can not withdraw yourself from your own team, you can remove members from your team. And if you really want to take the ultimate step, you can disband the team. However, please remember that disbanding a team is final, and there will be little record of the existence of the team after it is gone.
